Europe needs a strong EU-based API industry to achieve strategic autonomy for its health system.

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the vulnerability of the EU health system and accelerated the need for a new and radical strategy to strengthen its autonomy.

Today, the production of APIs in Europe is in a worrying decline and we are increasingly dependent on other world regions for the critical raw materials to produce our medicines.

However, we can still turn the tide. EFCG and Medicines for Europe believe that the 5 recommendations we develop in our paper will lead to an increased European API production, the backbone of a strong sustainable and innovative European pharmaceutical industry.
